Diary of a Dreamer in MAGA Country: Week 5

Kings and Lords

Originally published on Medium on Feb 22, 2025

‘And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.” ….“you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” …1 Samuel 8:7/17–18“accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed” -Declaration of Independence

Who is your king? Who is your lord?

The strikes, boycotts, and protests are getting more organized and we are seeing more people speak up. I think a declaration of kingdom is opening some eyes… and it is not enough for others. We are disposed to suffer and to choose someone to just take over for us. I see it in the posts of people who are recognizing that liking posts and asking for followers is not enough. I see it in the people who’ve already declared a world we haven’t transitioned to yet. I see it in those who will not pay attention, who refuse to, and will continue to refuse to until they can no longer refuse by choice.

You can choose who falls into these categories. We all have our sides we stick to: Samaritans to ignore, tax collectors to vilify, the poor to demonize. Be it immigrants or farmers, the disabled and the small business owners, or the dispossed vs. the disenfranchised… we have humans to dismiss.

They’re openly saying the things we’ve known but were hidden before. Talk of special camps for special people and of normalizing violence towards undesirables. What makes a president worthy of a holiday? What makes some of us worthy of death? Where will all of this really end? Can it even?

Safe havens aren’t safe if they are needed. The Lord is my refuge.

Who is your lord? Who is your king?

I am mostly disappointed. Governers bending knee. Pastors not speaking up. Friends being quiet.

“They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.” — Frederick Douglass

I didn’t expect the waves to be so silent but I keep hope that the song of the ruthless also stills upon their nearing crashes.
