Diary of a Dreamer in MAGA Country: Week 3

Proud and Underwhelmed

Originally published on Medium on Feb 7, 2025

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.” -Mathew 22:37–40

We are living in two different worlds, two realities, two images of heaven and hell; separated by our commandments to love.

I live surrounded by people that think differently than me. I am used to it and I am very aware of how those differences take place. Whether it be a political or a lifestyle difference, we are very divided as a nation and we are very committed to staying that way. Republican vs. Democrat. Conservative vs. Liberal. Far-Right vs. Far-Left. Good vs. Evil. Me vs. You. Someone has to win, someone has to lose...

…that’s the way it feels.

There were 50 protests in 50 states this week. A day without immigrants caused local spots to close in support. A Target boycott; a lot of boycotts. A national strike is being organized. Peaceful resistance so far. Wins.

Very little media attention. Representatives telling us to use our voice to tell them to stop what is happening. Courts battling orders. People hauled away from their homes. A new target each day. A new outrage. So much chaos.

I’ve haven’t been using my Facebook enough now that my algorithm is resetting. I am getting a LOT of conservative posts in my feed. The people on the other side are clueless to what we are doing and they are being fed conspiracies every step of the way.

We are winning battles but losing a war.

This is a battle of messaging and we are not very good at it. In their eyes, their savior has come in, bursting through political red-tape, flipping the corrupt tables in their temple, kicking out the thieves that are destroying the moral fortitude of our nation. They care about the end goal. They have a vision. They have revelations to cover their fears with hope. They believe, strongly, that they are doing what is right. They are not evil. They are acting in love. A love that tells them that there is a world beyond this one that matters more than anything we can build on this earth, a world that defeats death; and we are getting in the way of their mission, their commandment. We are bad.

We see “love your enemy” as a command to love everyone, no matter what. We see “made in the image of God” as a command to see everyone as equal and worthy of their life. We see ourselves in descriptions of “ the foreigners”, “the oppressed”, and “the least of these”. They are being told that empathy is a sin and that the only oppression that counts is that of those persecuted for their Christian faith. So they toil away, clinging to their beliefs are strongly as we cling to ours.

“Who then is a faithful and wise servant?” -Mathew 24:25

I don’t know. I know that we are all different and in many ways, very much the same. We are susceptible to both fierce leaders and weak commands. Our love covers sins, we just can’t agree which ones should be covered and which ones condemned. We argue over what is right and who is right and time keeps moving and people are hurt regardless of who or what we choose. Are we doing the work?

Love God, Love your Neighbor, Love your Enemy, as you love Yourself.

What do YOU believe in? What is your moral compass? What is your message? What is not? Should it matter who your enemy is when they’re all our neighbors? Are you taking care of yourself so you can keep up the fight? If none of this was happening, would you be doing something different? If you believe in God, do you believe Him?

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. ” 1 John 3:18–20

I think right now, we just need to buckle down and find a path to follow. We can’t take everyone on every road but we can help many from being lost on the journey. Choose your battles but stay aware of the greater picture.
