“So if you are suffering in a manner that please God, Keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.” 1 Peter 4:19
I came across a new concept this last month and I was reminded of it today by this verse. While reading The Tools by Phil Stutz and Barry Michaels, I learned about the tool called the Reversal of Desire.
This is a tool that is used when a person is experiencing pain. This can mean any type of pain but the pain comes from having to do something that you don’t want to do. We all experience a sort of pain when we are confronted with a difficult or tedious task. This pain keeps us from doing what we need to do, whether it may be working out or having an important conversation. Many of us choose feeling comfortable over feeling any sort of pain and because of this, there are many things in our lives that go undone.
In the book, these two doctors teach a new method to conquer this issue. They call it the the reversal of desire and explain that if instead of looking to avoid pain, we aim to desire it, we can gain enough force to get through it. With this tool we can evoke change in our life and keep on moving forward. The authors also allude to a higher force that we can connect with when we use the tools.
Whenever I read a book that talks about higher forces or the universe giving us power, I think of God. So as I opened my Devotion App to read my daily bible verse today, this is the verse I read and the idea of pushing through the pain was reinforced in my mind. It makes perfect sense.
There are many things that are good for me that I don’t always feel like doing, like working out, eating well, or working on my business. I am a shy person and I have a hard time getting out of my shell and doing things that are different but I know that those are the things that can help me grow and be a better version of me! Pain is a fact of life and it’s impossible to get rid of it. Whether I choose to go through the pain of weight lifting or experience the pain of having no strength because I never weight lifted, I still have to experience pain. It only makes sense to experience it when it it for a good purpose. Knowing that the pain I experience today means that I will have greater joy in the future makes it worth it.
Is there anything in your life that you are avoiding because it hurts too much to do? Let me know in the comments and we can talk about a way to overcome the pain and get you closer to a joyful future!
